EFCC vs Shehu Sani: Prosecution lawyers fail to produce exhibits

The prosecuting Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Barrister Abba Mohammed at the resumed hearing of the case before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja failed to produce exhibits he earlier claimed were available.

Thursday’s court proceeding was expected to scrutinize the exhibit in a criminal case the anti-graft agency instituted against the ex-lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani.

After Senator Sani’s defence Counsel addressed the Court for about five minutes, the presiding Judge thereafter ordered the prosecuting Counsel to turn in exhibits which was the reason for the Court adjourning.

EFCC’s lawyer said the exhibits are not ready because they are kept with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The presiding Judge then urged both parties to pick a date for the Court to reconvene for a continuation of trial while the matter was adjourned till 19th October 2020.

Meanwhile in an interview with Barrister Pelu Olajengbesi, Convener of Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates, he regretted that the prosecutors were the ones delaying a case they rushed to Court for.

He lampooned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for rushing to prosecute without due diligence, adding that the watchdog has been into an enterprise for political reasons.

He said “In summary, it has become glaring that the prosecutor came to Court unprepared and it’s quite unfortunate.

“In this case, the Court cannot go on, you don’t have the material evidence to prosecute the matter, so he has to seek an adjournment and the Court consented to it.
