The efforts align with the global tourism theme of promoting peace through cultural and natural heritage preservation.
Enugu State is set to become a major tourist destination, thanks to significant investments by Governor Peter Mbah.
As part of the Enugu State tourism development plan, the governor has allocated billions of naira to beautify the city and upgrade various parks and tourism projects across the state.
According to Dame Rita Mbah, Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Tourism Board, the initiative is aligned with this year’s World Tourism Day theme, which highlights the connection between tourism and peace.
She emphasised that by preserving cultural and natural heritage, the state can foster peaceful co-existence.
The state government has commenced the first stage of the Enugu city beautification project, beginning at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The airport entrance now features modern security cameras and art murals depicting the state’s cultural heritage, replacing the previous barricades.
The beautification efforts extend beyond the airport, with the government upgrading 13 roundabouts in the city. The first phase involves planting flowers and upgrading parks to create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
Among the significant projects under development are an international conference centre, a 5-star hotel, and a 300-bed hospital aimed at promoting medical tourism.
The international conference centre will also include an amusement park, a theatre, event centres, and retail shops, making it a comprehensive hub for tourism activities.
Additionally, the state government has awarded contracts for the development of five recreation parks: Edward Nnaji Park, Unity Park, Ejindu Park, Ngwo Park, and Eze Park.
These parks will offer various recreational facilities, including football pitches, basketball courts, and kiddies’ fun areas.
Dame Rita Mbah also revealed that preparations are underway to elevate the annual Unity Christmas Park, with local artisans working on creating a memorable experience for visitors.
