"At some point, you must decide whether to follow the general path or take a risk to achieve fulfilment."

Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Imanse shares her inspiring journey from Wall Street to Afrobeat stardom, highlighting the challenges and triumphs in an exclusive interview

Known for her dynamic blend of Afrobeat, R&B, and Soul, Imanse has been an active force in the Nigerian music industry for over five years.

Reflecting on her early life, Imanse shared that she grew up mainly in Lagos before spending a decade in the United States, where she earned a degree in Finance.

Her career began on Wall Street with Morgan Stanley and later continued with Tyco Electronics.

However, despite her corporate success, her passion for music led her to make a bold move — she left the corporate world to pursue her dream full-time in Nigeria.

“At some point, you must decide whether to follow the general path or take a risk to achieve fulfilment,” Imanse said.

Discussing her journey, she acknowledged the challenges of navigating a male-dominated industry, especially as a woman.

Despite the obstacles, she stressed that hard work, consistency, and creativity can open doors.

According to Imanse, having a strong support system and understanding the business side of music are crucial for success.

Speaking candidly about the state of the Nigerian music industry, she pointed out the lack of structure and professionalism that often complicates the careers of new artistes.

Imanse emphasised the importance of building one’s brand independently, hiring a lawyer, and reading all contracts thoroughly.

On the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Imanse noted that the industry took a hard hit due to the cancellation of live shows and tours but praised the growing importance of digital streaming as a new revenue source.

Outside of her music career, Imanse finds joy in swimming, beach outings, and relaxing with Netflix, revealing a balanced lifestyle that blends creativity with much-needed downtime.
