Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, the former two-term governor of Kano State, reportedly tendered his resignation on Friday.
This development was independently confirmed to The Eagle Online by a high-ranking source within the Presidency.
According to the source, Ganduje’s departure was not voluntary but rather a directive to ensure the party adheres strictly to its established zoning formula.
This formula stipulates that the North Central geopolitical zone should occupy the position of National Chairman, a deviation from the North West, which Ganduje represents.
The President is insistent that in the countdown to the 2027 elections, the party must enforce all the rules and one of them is the zone that should occupy the seat of the national chairman.
Reliable sources indicate that President Bola Tinubu personally enforced this decision on Friday, underscoring a commitment to party internal regulations.
Despite persistent calls, particularly from the North Central, for him to vacate the seat, Ganduje had consistently asserted his intention not to resign from the position.
However, a source familiar with the unfolding events revealed to The Eagle Online that the President has been unequivocal.
“The President is insistent that in the countdown to the 2027 elections, the party must enforce all the rules and one of them is the zone that should occupy the seat of the national chairman,” the source explained.

“Ganduje has been told pointedly that he must resign by the President. And he has done just that.” This pivotal moment signals President Tinubu’s firm stance on party discipline and adherence to zoning arrangements as the next general elections approach.
