Ikorodu City returns to winning ways with narrow NPFL victory

Ikorodu City beats Kwara United 1-0 in NPFL match, lifting them to third place, while Rivers United and Bendel Insurance also record wins

Ikorodu City returned to winning ways in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Sunday, defeating Kwara United 1-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

The decisive goal came inside five minutes when Samuel Ezekiel met a precise cross from Jaguar Uche to head the hosts into an early lead.

Kwara United fought to level the score, with Akeem Akanni, Johnmark Aule, and Babatunde Bright creating chances.

Akanni’s powerful strike forced a fine save from Ikorodu goalkeeper Michael Atata, and Aule’s follow-up narrowly missed.

Second-half tactical substitutions, including Eze Ogbodo, Mahe Alege, and Mustapha Salisu, added energy, but Kwara could not breach Ikorodu’s defence.

The win moves Ikorodu City to 35 points from 21 matches, securing third place on the NPFL table.

Kwara United remain 16th with 24 points and will host Rivers United in their next fixture.

Elsewhere on matchday 21, Rivers United edged past 10-man Remo Stars 1-0 at home, with Okon Aniekeme scoring the late winner.

The Sky Blues Stars had been reduced to ten men after Chilekwu Chigozie was sent off in the 50th minute.

Rivers now top the NPFL standings on 41 points, followed by Abia Warriors on 37 after a 1-0 win over Kano Pillars.

Other results saw Bendel Insurance defeat El-Kanemi Warriors 3-2, Bayelsa United overcome Shooting Stars 2-0, and Plateau United narrowly beat Wikki Tourists 1-0 through Temitope Vincent. Nasarawa United defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1, while Enyimba drew 0-0 with Barau in coach Deji Ayeni’s first game.
