The incident, which took place on Sunday, 29 June 2025 at about 8:00 p.m., was reported to the Gumel Divisional Police Headquarters following a violent altercation between the suspect and his 75-year-old mother, Dahara Mu’azu. The community has been left stunned by the shocking nature of the crime.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday in Dutse by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, the suspect attacked his mother with mud blocks, repeatedly striking her on the head. Officers arrived to find the elderly woman in a pool of blood, suffering from severe injuries.
“She was rushed to Gumel General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death on June 30,” the statement read.
Abubakar was immediately taken into custody. The police noted that he is currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The statement further revealed that a discreet investigation is being conducted, after which the suspect will be formally charged to court.
Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Abdullahi, condemned the killing, calling it “inhuman, barbaric, and utterly reprehensible.”
He has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to handle the case personally and ensure that justice is served without delay.
In a broader appeal, the Jigawa State Police Command called on citizens to be more proactive in reporting domestic violence and mental health concerns to prevent similar tragedies.
“We urge the public to report early signs of mental health crises or domestic tension to the police or community leaders,” SP Adam stated.
The incident has shaken the local community to its core. Sule Baba, a neighbour of the deceased, expressed deep shock over the act.
“I am appalled by the brutality and senseless killing of the 75-year-old woman by her own son,” he said. “As a community, we are shocked and disturbed. We demand justice for the victim and her family.”
Another resident, Aminu Lawan, echoed the call for justice, stating that the case highlights serious gaps in community vigilance and mental health support.
“This incident is a wake-up call for our leaders and law enforcement agencies. We need proactive measures to tackle mental health issues and domestic conflict before they spiral into tragedy,” Lawan urged.
The police reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining order and protecting lives across Jigawa State.
“The command is committed to ensuring justice, and we ask for community cooperation in our crime prevention efforts,” said SP Adam.
He encouraged citizens to support police operations, stating that only through collaboration can a safer and more secure environment be achieved for all residents.
As investigations continue, the tragedy remains a stark reminder of the urgent need for mental health awareness, early intervention, and stronger community policing.
