The group expressed its support in a press statement, describing the appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a step in the right direction for national equity and justice.
Afenifere praised Oladele as a “detribalised Nigerian and social crusader of impeccable character.”
They noted that his public career has been a reflection of his commitment to fairness, inclusion, and national development.
The organisation stated that his new role at the Federal Character Commission is a natural extension of his long-standing service to Nigeria.
The statement recalled Oladele’s critical role during Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
His involvement with Afenifere, the Campaign for Democracy, and the National Democratic Coalition was particularly noted.
According to the group, Oladele stood firm during the height of military oppression, risking personal freedom to support the democratic mandate of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola after the annulled 1993 election.
“His courage during the dark days of military rule was never in doubt,” a senior Afenifere member said. “Oladele stood in the trenches with us. His voice and actions contributed directly to the restoration of civil rule.”
His legislative accomplishments were also highlighted. During his time in the House of Representatives, Oladele introduced the Public Holiday Amendment Act.
That landmark legislation shifted Nigeria’s Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 to honour the historic 1993 election. He also introduced and sponsored the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Act.
The law established an independent body for financial intelligence, separating the unit from EFCC control and ensuring transparency in handling financial crime.
Within Afenifere itself, Oladele’s contributions have been consistent and substantial. He is recognised as a member with vision and commitment.
According to the group, his appointment reflects not only his professional excellence but also his moral clarity.
Afenifere believes that Oladele’s new position is timely. As Acting Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, he is expected to reinforce national unity through balanced representation and fair recruitment across the country.
His role is essential in addressing long-standing complaints about inequality and regional imbalance in public service appointments.
“We have unflinching confidence in Oladele’s demonstrable competence, experience, and integrity to deliver on the new mandate,” the statement said.
“He represents the values Afenifere holds dear—justice, inclusion, and service to the nation.”
Afenifere concluded by reaffirming its trust in the president’s judgment and encouraged Oladele to continue upholding the principles he has always stood for.
The group also called on Nigerians to support efforts that promote fairness in governance.
Oladele’s appointment is seen by many political observers as not just an administrative reshuffle, but a moral statement by the presidency.
His history of activism and public service suggests he is more than capable of driving reforms at the commission.
Supporters are hopeful that he will help ensure all ethnic and regional groups in Nigeria receive equal treatment.
