Lagos State government’s environmental enforcement team has taken a decisive action today to enforce the ban on the usage of foam disposable takeaway packs (Styrofoam) and other single-use plastics within the Mushin area.
The ban, which was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, in January of this year, has been enforced with immediate effect.
The aim is to tackle the growing problem of non-biodegradable materials in the state, particularly in densely populated areas like Mushin.
Under the supervision of Environmental Health Officers from Mushin Local Government, enforcement activities were carried out in various markets within the Mushin area, including Daleko market, Mushin market, Alamutu market, and others.
During the operation, items found to be in violation of the ban, including Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, were confiscated by the environmental enforcement team. These confiscated items were then deposited and stored at the Zone D Area Office of the Mushin Local Government.
“This enforcement action is a crucial step in our commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all residents of Lagos State,” stated Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources.
“By cracking down on the usage of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, we are taking proactive measures to protect our environment and preserve our natural resources for future generations.”
The enforcement team’s efforts are part of a broader strategy by the Lagos State government to promote environmental conservation and combat pollution across the state.
