West African Law Students’ Association (WALSA), on Thursday, urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to set up a special committee to monitor the utilisation of World Bank Loans and other interventions from donor partners.

President of the Association, Mr. Nazir Sunusi, told journalists at a press conference, in Abuja, that lots of loan from the World Bank and other donors agencies are being misused, thus defeating the purpose for which it was collected.

He suggested that the committee should focus on ending such misuse of fund, and design modalities for the funds to be effectively used for the purposes it was meant and not on other frivolities.

Sunusi urged President Tinubu to ensure that the loans are used to improve the living standard of Nigerians, particularly the youths, women and children, instead of corrupt system that encourages embezzlement.

He said: “We need restructuring of the usage of these funds, implementations and outcomes. We, thus request that the government should set up a committee to look into this quickly.

“We want it to be used transparently; on sustainable empowerment and support programmes that will be open to the public to verify. Let us impact on the less privileged by now channeling the monies on sustainable empowerment and supports.”

He appealed that government should direct that the funds should be used for sustainable empowerment to communities, LGAs, villages etc, so the vulnerable that the funds are meant for will benefit’’.

He said it was unfortunate that in the past, large chunk of World Bank loans had been spent on advocacy, meetings and consultancies.

“We don’t want our loans to be used again on any advocacy, meetings or consultancy, even paying for office rent’’, Sunusi told newsmen.
