Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Moises Caicedo’s brilliant opener, giving Liverpool hope of a comeback. However, Willian’s close-range finish in stoppage time left the Reds stunned and extended their losing streak to three matches.
The defeat compounds Liverpool’s unexpected blip after a perfect start to the season, which saw them win their first seven matches in all competitions.
Losses at Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and now Chelsea have raised questions about the team’s cohesion following Arne Slot’s heavy investment of over £400 million on new signings.
Caicedo opened the scoring in the 14th minute, exploiting slack Liverpool defending to curl a sublime strike into the top corner.
Chelsea’s early brilliance contrasted with Liverpool’s lacklustre performance, as Alejandro Garnacho and Alexander Isak failed to make a meaningful impact in attack.
Slot attempted to revive his side with a half-time substitution, bringing on Florian Wirtz. The move created chances for Mohamed Salah, who struggled to convert, reflecting his recent dip in form.
Ryan Gravenberch also saw a long-range effort comfortably saved by Robert Sanchez.
Liverpool eventually equalised in the 87th minute after Isak flicked Marc Cucurella’s cross into the path of Gakpo, who converted from close range.
Despite this, Chelsea responded in stoppage time, with Estevao’s opportunistic finish sending Stamford Bridge into celebration. Manager Enzo Maresca’s animated reaction earned him a red card.
The loss also saw Liverpool slip to second place in the Premier League, with Arsenal overtaking them after a win against West Ham.
For Chelsea, the victory lifts them to sixth place and halts their three-game losing streak.
