Ogun State police dismantle Cameroonian kidnap ring

An Edo fake kidnap claim has led to the arrest of a TikTok creator accused of staging an abduction to gain followers, prompting serious police action.

Authorities have confirmed that an Edo fake kidnap claim has resulted in the arrest of a social media content creator accused of fabricating her own abduction to boost online engagement.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, 24-year-old Osarobo Omoyemen, widely known as Madam Oil Rice, falsely claimed she was kidnapped at Upper Sakponba Road in Benin.

She further alleged that police operatives rescued her, detained her at Akpata Police Station and collected N10000 as bail.

Yamu said the report triggered an immediate investigation. He explained that the story was discovered to be entirely false and deliberately crafted to attract followers to her TikTok page.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to staging the incident solely for online content.

The police spokesperson warned that the misleading video was dangerous, as it could incite hostility against the police and create unnecessary tension within the state.

He added that an earlier deleted clip revealed an accomplice urging viewers to follow her page, clearly exposing the motive behind the manufactured drama.

Omoyemen has since been charged to court on 20 November 2025, while efforts continue to track down her accomplices so they face the full weight of the law.

Yamu said the decisive action is intended to serve as a powerful deterrent to others who may attempt to misuse social media to cause panic or disrupt public peace.

He stressed that the command remains firmly opposed to fake news capable of undermining security efforts.

The public was urged to verify information before sharing and to avoid circulating content that may mislead residents or damage trust in security agencies.

Yamu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting peace, safety and stability across Edo State.
