Canada election Mark Carney

Canada’s election sees Mark Carney and the Liberals poised for a dramatic comeback against the Conservatives, as US threats under Donald Trump dominate the campaign

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]anada heads to the polls today in a historic election where the newly installed Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party aim to secure a surprise victory against the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre.

The dramatic campaign has been shaped by rising annexation threats from the United States and the aggressive trade policies of President Donald Trump.

Carney, a former central bank governor in both Canada and Britain, entered the race just last month after Justin Trudeau’s resignation, bringing promises of strong financial leadership and reduced reliance on the United States.

“We don’t need chaos, we need calm. We don’t need anger, we need an adult,” Carney said in the final days of the campaign, positioning himself as the steady hand Canadians need in turbulent times.

Polls suggest a tight race, but momentum appears to be swinging towards the Liberals, marking a dramatic reversal from early January forecasts where the Conservatives led by over 20 points.

Voter concern over Trump’s antagonism towards Canada has played a key role in boosting Carney’s appeal.

Pierre Poilievre has focused on domestic issues like inflation, crime, and housing, warning that a Carney government would represent a continuation of the “lost Liberal decade.”

Nearly 29 million Canadians are eligible to vote today, with early voting turnout already breaking records.
