At the Meta Connect 2024 developer conference, Meta unveiled significant upgrades to its AI capabilities. One of the most notable advancements is the introduction of Meta AI voice capabilities across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Users can now interact verbally with the AI, choosing from a variety of voices, including AI-generated replicas of celebrities such as Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell.
While Meta’s new feature aims to enhance user interaction, it differs from OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, which is praised for its expressive tones.
Instead, Meta AI’s offering is more comparable to Google’s Gemini Live, which uses synthetic voices to transcribe and read aloud responses.
Meta has invested heavily in securing the rights to use these celebrity voices, reportedly paying millions. Despite this, industry experts remain cautious, reserving judgment until the feature is more widely tested and reviewed.
Beyond the voice capabilities, Meta AI now also features image analysis, enabling users to share photos and receive detailed information about them.
Additionally, Meta is piloting a translation tool for Instagram Reels that automatically dubs creators’ speech into another language while synchronising lip movements, aiming to improve the viewing experience for multilingual audiences.
This tool is currently in a testing phase with select Latin American creators, focusing on English and Spanish translations.
