Captain Ukamaka Okoh, speaking after team clinched third place in the tournament, promised fans that the Lagos-based side would return “better, stronger” in 2026 to reclaim their league title.
The defending champions, led by coach Ochuko Owolabi, came into the competition seeking a third consecutive crown.
However, a shocking group-stage defeat to eventual champions Dolphins disrupted their campaign. Despite making the semi-finals, a narrow 47-45 loss to First Bank ended their title defence.
Speaking with PUNCH Sports Extra, Okoh said,
“We are not relenting. We are going back to continue working as a team. We are promising our fans out there that next year we are coming out better, stronger and to also win the league again.”
Though clearly disappointed, Okoh remained optimistic, expressing gratitude for the team’s bronze medal finish after a commanding 70-46 win over Royal Aces.
“I don’t feel happy taking this position, but I still thank God that at least I’m going home with something. This wasn’t the plan. The plan was to retain the title for this year, but it happened and so I give glory to God.”
MFM Basketball Club has been one of the most dominant forces in Nigerian women’s basketball in recent years, with back-to-back championships prior to this season.
Their exit at the semi-final stage has only fuelled their resolve to reclaim top spot next year.
