NERC Vice Chairman urges faster meter rollout across Nigeria

NERC Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni urges DisCos to speed up rollout of 600,000–700,000 electricity meters and enhance public awareness

Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musiliu Oseni, has urged electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to accelerate the rollout of electricity meters nationwide.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, during the 4th NESI Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja.

Oseni stated that between 600,000 and 700,000 meters are currently available in the country and called on DisCos to ensure the devices reach consumers promptly.

He emphasised the importance of improved publicity to inform the public.

“There are currently 600,000 to 700,000 meters available in the country. Utilities must improve publicity. The government has made the investment, so the DisCos need to step up,” he said.

The Vice Chairman also highlighted the ongoing transition to State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, urging DisCos to cooperate fully with emerging state regulators.

“No licensee is bigger than their regulator,” Oseni warned, stressing the need for compliance with the evolving regulatory framework.

Oseni clarified misconceptions about the tenure of NERC Commissioners, explaining that the “staggering principle” mentioned in Section 36 of the Electricity Act applied only to the pioneer Commission.

Subsequent Chairmen and Commissioners serve fixed five-year terms as outlined in Section 36(1) of the Act.

The session marked Oseni’s final NESI stakeholders’ meeting in his capacity as Vice Chairman, closing his tenure with a call for accelerated meter deployment and stronger regulatory adherence.
