The electricity and water supply to the buildings housing Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives have been shut down by members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN). This action has also impacted other facilities within the National Assembly complex.
The shutdown follows PASAN’s compliance with the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) due to the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000. PASAN members have also blocked the entrance and exit gates of the assembly complex with two buses, further immobilizing the premises.
The NLC and organized labor have been demanding a new minimum wage of N494,000, significantly higher than the current offer from the government. This ongoing dispute has led to a complete halt in the operations of the National Assembly, affecting legislative activities.
