On Sunday, the Northern Nigeria Disability Forum (NNDF) appealed to youths across the country to refrain from participating in the upcoming nationwide protests scheduled for August 1.
Instead, the forum urged them to pray for peace and progress in Nigeria.
Chairman of the forum, Yerima Sulaiman, made this call following a prayer session organized by the group. Sulaiman stated that the forum’s members, who are often significantly impacted by protests and lockdowns, have decided to distance themselves from the planned demonstrations.
He emphasized that many PWDs (Persons with Disabilities) rely on daily activities to earn their living, and disruptions caused by protests pose additional challenges for them.
Sulaiman also expressed dissatisfaction with the current economic situation and highlighted the high unemployment rates among PWDs, including secondary school leavers and graduates. He called on the government to ensure that PWDs are considered for job opportunities and appointments.
The National Secretary of NNDF, Aminu Umar, explained that the prayer session was held in Kaduna State due to its diverse demographic, which reflects the forum’s mission to promote peace, unity, and the protection of PWDs’ rights.
Clerics present at the session praised the forum for its efforts in fostering peaceful coexistence. Malam Muhammad Sirajo, leader of Tsangaya schools in Zaria, emphasized the power of prayer in solving problems, urging Nigerians to seek divine guidance from their leaders to improve the nation’s situation.
Pastor Ibrahim Ajiya of Nazareth Baptist Church in Sabon Tasha also encouraged youths to avoid actions that could lead to unrest. He advised continued prayer and dialogue with authorities to address the country’s issues constructively.
