At a press briefing held in Kaduna on Wednesday, the Union’s National President, Alhaji Abu Mohammed, said Nigeria’s diversity must be embraced, not exploited, and warned that intolerance and moral decay are eroding the country’s potential.
“The Union was founded to confront tribalism, religious intolerance, and moral decline that continue to hinder national progress,” Mohammed said.
“We are not a political association but a social movement committed to reawakening patriotism, justice, and shared values.”
He noted that the Northern Peoples Union unity message is especially targeted at young Nigerians, with programmes focused on empowerment, vocational training, and inclusive development.
“Youth are the backbone of this nation,” he stressed. “Through empowerment, skills, and mentoring, we are equipping them for the future and bridging divisions that have long set us back.”
Mohammed used the occasion to commend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his leadership during the recent political standoff in the state, describing the governor’s calm response to the declaration of emergency as “a model of maturity”.
“Governor Fubara’s peaceful approach prioritised lives over politics,” Mohammed said. “He chose unity over ego, and his restraint deserves national recognition.”
The Northern Peoples Union unity message also called on all levels of government to invest in areas that reduce poverty and foster unity—such as agriculture, technology, vocational skills, and financial inclusion.

“We must never allow Nigeria to fracture along ethnic or religious lines,” he warned. “Instead, we must transform our diversity into a strength and build a nation that leaves no one behind.”
Mohammed urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to adopt a selfless mindset and resist the temptation of narrow ambition.
“We have no other home but Nigeria,” he said. “It’s time to rise above personal interest and work for the good of all.”
