Philip Agbese defends proposed purchase of new Aircraft for President Tinubu

Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has defended the proposed purchase of a new aircraft for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, citing national security and the well-being of the country as primary concerns.

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence had recently recommended that the Federal Government procure new aircraft for the President and Vice President following an investigation into the status of the current presidential air fleet.

This recommendation comes shortly after three planes from the Presidential Air Fleet were listed for sale, sparking debate amidst the nation’s ongoing economic difficulties. Speaking with Arise Television, Agbese responded to criticisms, emphasizing the importance of the proposal for national security. He stated, “We consider that to be for national security and the well-being of the country.”

Agbese underscored the importance of ensuring the President’s safety, drawing an analogy to the health of the nation: “If the head (Tinubu) is sick, or something happens to the head, it will affect the rest of the whole nation.”

He also clarified that the House’s focus extends beyond governmental needs to addressing the needs of ordinary Nigerians. Agbese pointed out that the House has discussed numerous bills and motions aimed at benefiting the common citizen, with “675 motions” addressing their concerns.

“We are not yet where we want to be as a nation because of our background. We want a Nigeria that will work for our people,” Agbese added, highlighting the ongoing efforts to improve the country’s situation despite current challenges.

The proposal to acquire new aircraft has been met with mixed reactions, particularly given the economic hardships facing many Nigerians. Nonetheless, Agbese’s defense suggests a prioritization of the leadership’s security and stability as integral to the nation’s overall well-being.
