‘Premier League-Bound’ West Brom join race to sign iconic Nigerian midfielder

He’s been without a club for a while, but former Super Eagles captain could make a return to football soon with the promotion-chasing side reportedly interested in his services

According to Sky Sports, West Bromwich Albion are interested in giving ex-Chelsea midfielder, Obi Mikel, a chance to return to England to play his football.

Mikel is one of Nigeria’s most decorated players in history, with the 33-year-old midfielder winning the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and Europa League during a largely successful 11-year spell in London.

The one-time Middlesbrough ace has, however, been without a club since March after terminating his contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

An elegant defensive midfielder with the ability to build-up play from the base of the midfield, Mikel has not been short of suitors, with a couple of Brazilian and Mexican teams reportedly negotiating with the 2013 African Cup of Nations winner.

Serie B champions Benevento are also reportedly keen on Mikel, with his experience viewed has being needed to navigate the tough Serie A next campaign.

West Brom are believed to be interested in signing Mikel on a free transfer, with Slaven Bilic’s already planning for life in the Premier League next season.
