The Read,Educate and Developers (READERS) Club have concluded plans to mark her 35th anniversary in promoting the reading culture amongst Nigerians over the years. The auspicious event will herald a new beginning for the targeted readers that are leaders’ tomorrow.

Information available revealed that on the 5th of October 1986, Junior Readers Club (JRC) was formed at the reputable St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos by a group of young students who aspired to build a network of book lovers within all schools in the region. Over the years, the spread and influence of this club has grown with a growing number of schools having same club till date.

To strategically position the club and revive the reading culture, in 2018, thirty-two years later, her Board of Trustees (BOT) came together to form The Readers’ Club of Nigeria (RCN) in order to promote their original idea nationwide.

As part of the plans to make the club bigger and better, RCN was re-launched and duly registered to propagate the following aims:

• To promote a reading culture amongst Nigerians.
• Establish Read, Educate and Developers Club (R.E.A.Ders Club) in Schools and other institutions.
• Organize courses and events to promulgate this aim.
• Work with other groups within and outside the country and exchange information to achieve this aim.
• To revive a reading culture by taking over moribund reading facilities, this they aim to achieve by forming strategic alliances with individuals and groups of like minds.

According to Mr. Babs Fagade, the Vice Chairman, Board of Trustee (BOT), he said the club has come to stay and he enjoined meaningful organizations and like-mindedindividuals’ home and abroad to connect with the Readers’ Club of Nigeria (RCN) in their campaign at rising a new generation of readers who invariably become great leaders in Nigeria and beyond.

In the spirit of merry-moments and to get many Nigerian students engaged, the club as packaged an Essay Competition with relevant topics for the Senior Secondary School category -1500 words “Nigeria of Today, Problems and Soluytions” and for the Junior Secondary School category -1000 words “Effect of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Children in Nigeria” respectively.

Winners in the highlighted categories from the Essay Competition will receive cash and gift vouchers for books respectively. For the anticipated participation by Nigerian students, further details can be found on the club’s website

Mr. Emmanuel P. Frey, Secretary, Board of Trustees (BOT) emphasized that “RCN as a leader in the promotion of a reading culture and need for basic education in Nigeria, would appreciate schools and parents to encourage the wards to participate in the Essay Competition which will go a long way in making a good impact and giving credibility to our just cause to promote unending reading culture in Nigeria” he concluded.

Interested members of the public who wants to join The Readers’ Club of Nigeria (RCN) are very well welcomed, however; with the approval of the Board of Trustees (BOT). More details can be found on their website: www.readersclubng.org.
