Her appointment signifies not only a remarkable personal achievement but also a victory for inclusive and progressive governance in Nigeria’s bustling commercial capital.

Born on 16 August 1980, Mrs Meranda hails from an illustrious lineage that reflects Lagos’ rich heritage.

The daughter of the late Chief T. A. Lawal Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos, and Princess M. A. Lawal-Akapo, she is deeply rooted in the Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru royal families.

This noble heritage imbues her leadership style with a blend of tradition and modernity, resonating with her constituents and the broader Lagos populace.

A Trailblazer in Service

Mrs Meranda’s political journey began in 2015 when she was first elected to represent Apapa Constituency-1. Her constituents have since reaffirmed their trust in her leadership through re-elections in 2019 and 2023.

As Deputy Speaker and Chief Whip of the 9th Assembly, she showcased legislative brilliance and the ability to foster unity within the House.

Her tenure is marked by a focus on refining laws to meet contemporary challenges and initiating policies that directly impact Lagosians.

Under her leadership, the House has prioritised collaboration, innovation, and pragmatic solutions to pressing issues.

Grassroots Impact and Legislative Achievements

Mrs Meranda’s accomplishments extend beyond the legislative chambers to the heart of her constituency. Her initiatives include:

  • Refurbishment of schools and water projects to enhance living conditions.
  • Empowerment programmes for petty traders and widows, addressing socioeconomic challenges.

Her legislative focus emphasises repealing outdated laws and ensuring policies are enforceable and relevant to the daily lives of Lagosians.

A Role Model for Women and Young Leaders

As one of four women in a 40-member Assembly, Mrs Meranda’s rise to the Speakership is a beacon of hope for gender equality in Nigerian politics. Her advocacy for fair representation has inspired many women to step into leadership roles.

“Power is not served à la carte,” she often says, highlighting the importance of strategic effort in achieving impactful governance.

A Vision for a Progressive Lagos

Mrs Meranda envisions a Lagos where inclusivity and sustainable development drive governance. Her priorities include advancing education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment. She is committed to fostering policies that ensure every citizen has a voice in shaping Lagos’ future.
