Lagos blue economy

Lagos blue economy gets boost as Governor Sanwo-Olu declares waterways vital for jobs, innovation, and climate resilience at African summit.

Lagos blue economy is receiving renewed political and financial backing, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared the state’s inland and ocean waters the “foundation” of its economic and climate future.

Speaking at the African Blue Economy Summit held in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu emphasised the strategic importance of water-based assets in driving job creation, innovation, and environmental resilience. He highlighted that the city is now positioning itself as a continental leader in marine-driven development.

“The ocean is not just our heritage,” the governor posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, “it is our opportunity for jobs, innovation, transport, and resilience against climate change.”

The comments came amid the buzz surrounding the E1 Lagos GP, Africa’s first all-electric powerboat championship, which also took place in the city.

The event was held up as a vivid example of how water can spark not just sport and spectacle, but also “big ideas in technology and sustainability.”

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is already putting significant resources behind its blue economy ambitions, particularly in water transport, maritime infrastructure, and climate adaptation.

Summit

“Lagos is ready to lead Africa in building a blue economy that works for people today and protects the planet for tomorrow,” he stated.

The summit gathered policymakers, investors, and global stakeholders who echoed the importance of rethinking economic growth through marine innovation.

was a shared consensus that Lagos is quickly emerging as a critical hub for sustainable development on the continent.
