Odogwu Chibuzor, part of a four-man gang armed with a Dane gun and other weapons, was shot and arrested during the incident. The suspects were caught while siphoning diesel from heavy-duty trucks within the plant.
According to a police source, the gang had filled three 25-litre jerrycans with diesel before security guards intervened.
Chibuzor sustained a gunshot wound and was subsequently treated at Ilaro General Hospital before being placed in police custody.
In a video obtained by authorities, Chibuzor confessed to his involvement in the crime, admitting it was his first time with the group, which had more than 20 members.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the recovery of the gang’s Dane gun and jerrycans used during the crime. Authorities are now working with local security agencies to track down the remaining suspects.
This incident mirrors a similar attempted robbery at the plant in 2017, during which two gang members were shot dead by police operatives while trying to steal armoured cables.
