The self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Government in Exile was found guilty of inciting terrorist acts and promoting violence that contributed to civil unrest in southeastern Nigeria.

The Päijät-Häme District Court delivered its verdict after months of legal proceedings.

Ekpa was initially arrested on 21 November 2024 by Finnish authorities following a prolonged investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The charges against him stemmed from what the court described as “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.”

The offenses were said to have occurred between August 2021 and November 2024, during which Ekpa used social media platforms to broadcast inflammatory rhetoric, allegedly fueling violence in Nigeria’s southeast region.

In response to these activities, the NBI not only detained Ekpa but also froze his assets, along with those of his known associates and affiliated companies, citing financial links to potentially criminal operations.

Ekpa, who gained prominence as a vocal separatist and digital broadcaster, had continued to operate from Finland despite multiple appeals from Nigerian authorities demanding action against him.

His broadcasts were frequently cited in violent incidents associated with IPOB’s sit-at-home orders and clashes with security agencies.

The court’s ruling marks a significant moment in cross-border accountability and sends a powerful message about the global consequences of online incitement to violence.

As of press time, neither Ekpa nor his legal team has issued a public statement.
