Super Eagles World Cup Qualification hopes rise as Nigeria beat Lesotho 2-1, moving closer to the 2026 finals with one crucial game remaining

Super Eagles World Cup Qualification campaign took a major boost on Friday as Nigeria edged Lesotho 2-1 in a tense encounter that may prove decisive for their path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when William Troost-Ekong confidently converted a penalty after a Lesotho defender handled the ball in the box, sparking jubilation among the home supporters.

Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 80th minute with a clinical strike, seemingly sealing the win for the Super Eagles.

However, Lesotho’s Kalake struck just three minutes later, pulling one back to set up a nervy finish.

Despite the late scare, the Super Eagles held firm to claim the vital three points. The result keeps Nigeria within touching distance of qualification, though their fate is still not entirely in their hands.

Benin Republic’s win in their own fixture means Nigeria sit on 14 points, trailing Benin, who lead Group C with 17 points.

With one match remaining, Super Eagles World Cup Qualification hopes now depend on both performance and favourable results from rivals.

A decisive clash against Benin Republic looms large. Victory would be essential for Nigeria to remain in contention.

Alternatively, a slip-up by Benin or South Africa in their final matches could open the door for the Super Eagles to clinch top spot.

Goal difference may also play a crucial role. Nigeria will need to score freely and tighten their defence to improve their standing should teams finish level on points.

For Lesotho, the defeat is a crushing setback that virtually ends their qualifying journey. With just nine points from five matches, their chances of progressing are now almost non-existent.

As the final round approaches, the atmosphere in Nigeria is charged with hope and anticipation. Fans believe that with grit, focus, and a little luck, the Super Eagles World Cup Qualification dream can still become reality.
