Aisha Achimugu to heave a sigh of relief as Tinubu settles rift with Sanwo-Olu, but not so fast

President Tinubu reconciles with Governor Sanwo-Olu amid insider revelations linking their fallout to Aisha Achimugu’s financial scandal. Has the dust truly settled?

Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu reconciliation may offer momentary calm in Lagos political circles, but sources suggest the real trigger behind the fallout might have much to do with embattled socialite Aisha Achimugu than previously disclosed.

On Sunday, Chief Muraina Taiwo, a prominent member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), declared that the alleged tension between President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had finally been laid to rest.

In a phone interview with The PUNCH, Taiwo remarked, “God has resolved it. The father (Tinubu) has drawn his son (Sanwo-Olu) closer, and the son has also hugged his father; we are now one in Lagos State.”

He made the comments shortly after a meeting between the President and members of the GAC. Echoing the sentiment, APC chieftain and former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, also confirmed that party leaders were actively involved in resolving the differences between the two top figures.

But the public reconciliation, while soothing on the surface, masks a deeper layer of tension fuelled by allegations of financial misconduct linked to Aisha Achimugu.

An insider source confirmed that the initial crack in the relationship between Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu was not entirely political; but rather financial.

The source stated that “the issue that created the mistrust stemmed from a web of suspicious financial dealings implicating Aisha Achimugu, which strained trust at the highest level.”

Achimugu has been under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a slew of alleged financial crimes, including money laundering, Ponzi operations, and illegal acquisition of properties.

These issues, previously thought to be unrelated to the Lagos political establishment, now appear to have crossed into sensitive corridors of power.

The insider suggests that with Tinubu’s reconciliation with Sanwo-Olu now formalised, the situation around Achimugu may begin to quietly fade from the radar, hinting at a “soft landing” for the embattled socialite.

But Lagos politics is rarely linear.

Though the handshake between the nation’s number one citizen and his political protégé in the state may signal stability on the outside, unresolved tensions could still simmer beneath the surface.

The people of Lagos; and Nigeria at large, will be watching whether this truce holds, and if Achimugu’s troubles will indeed dissipate or merely retreat for now.

In political parlance, nothing is ever quite over; especially when big money and bigger names are involved.
