Tokunbo Wahab reaffirms Lagos’ leadership in turning climate challenges into green economic opportunities through bold blue economy initiatives
Tokunbo Wahab has reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s determination to turn environmental challenges into thriving economic opportunities ahead of the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit.
Themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” the summit aims to spotlight Lagos as Africa’s rising model for climate action and sustainable finance.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Eko Atlantic Corporate Office in Victoria Island, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Wahab, declared with conviction that Africa is not waiting to be rescued but ready to lead.
His statement set an optimistic tone for what promises to be one of the continent’s most forward-looking environmental gatherings.
He underscored the state’s massive investments in coastal defences, flood mitigation, renewable energy, urban greening, and circular economy initiatives.
These, he said, are not mere projects but transformative commitments positioning Lagos as a continental leader in environmental innovation and climate resilience.
“The blue economy is the next frontier of African prosperity,” Wahab said, noting that Lagos is building partnerships that will make sustainability both profitable and inclusive.
The forthcoming summit is expected to draw global institutions, subnational governments, investors, scientists, and innovators to co-create practical and bankable solutions for Africa’s pressing coastal and environmental challenges.
Wahab was accompanied by the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, along with permanent secretaries, agency heads, and key officials of the ministry.
Their joint appearance underscored the administration’s unified commitment to climate-driven governance.
“Together, we are shaping a Lagos that not only adapts to change but leads it,” Wahab said, describing the state’s green transition as both a moral responsibility and an economic imperative.
