A routine commute turned into a nightmare today as an Ibeshe-bound passenger ferry named T-Ben collided with a submerged shoreline concrete near the power line corridor at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.

According to a release signed by the head of Public Affairs Unit, Lagos State Waterways Authority, Wuraola Alake, of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and made available to Freelanews, the incident, which occurred at approximately 6:50 PM local time, has left one person dead.
Of the 17 passengers believed to have been on board the ill-fated ferry, 15 have been successfully rescued.
However, with rescue efforts still ongoing at the time of issuing this statement, the fate of the remaining individual remains uncertain.
“A couple were meant to board, but husband arrived earlier and took the illl-fated boat. The wife took the next one and was at the accident scene, shouting for the rescue of her husband,” a source informed our correspondent.
Officers from the Search and Rescue Unit of LASWA, in collaboration with other volunteers, are working tirelessly at the scene to carry out further rescue operations. The magnitude of the tragedy underscores the importance of swift and coordinated response efforts in such emergencies.
LASWA has also confirmed that the officers from the Marine Unit of The Nigerian Police Force and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA are currently at the LASWA office to hand over the recovered female corpse to the officers of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit SEHMU.
“In light of this tragedy, the Lagos State Waterways Authority urges the public to exercise caution and vigilance when using water transportation services. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” Alake said.
