Speaking at the ceremony, President Tinubu commended the institution for sustaining education despite years of insurgency in Northeast Nigeria.
He highlighted government efforts to expand university infrastructure, improve teacher welfare, and support digital learning initiatives as evidence of commitment to developing human capital.
The celebration reflected on the university’s founding under the Third National Development Plan in 1975, noting its role in producing skilled professionals across medicine, engineering, law, technology, and the sciences.
The president lauded students and staff who continued learning and teaching under the most challenging circumstances, including attacks that destroyed classrooms, laboratories, and libraries in Borno State.
“Fifty years test not only the durability of an institution but the quality and impact of its graduates,” President Tinubu said.
“The University of Maiduguri has nurtured minds that contribute to innovation, leadership, and community development across Nigeria and beyond.”
The event also highlighted government investment in education, including a 3.5 trillion naira allocation in the 2025 national budget, funding for mechanised farming programmes, grants for medical education, and expanded entrepreneurship initiatives.
These measures aim to equip graduates for a modern, knowledge-driven economy while addressing regional disparities in access and quality.
President Tinubu emphasised that education is the foundation of national security, democracy, and economic growth, and praised the university for maintaining its mission in the face of ideological attacks that sought to extinguish learning in the region.
He encouraged alumni, policymakers, and communities to champion the transformative power of education to sustain national progress.
