On the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar raised concern over the country’s falling standard of life.
In a statement released on Friday, Atiku said it is unfortunate that a country with large oil reserves is experiencing unemployment and poverty.
He requested that the administration pursue policies that will assist Nigerians in need while also improving the country’s security situation.
“As we celebrate our Independence Day, I urge togetherness, even as I remain concerned about Nigerians’ decreasing standard of living,” Atiku stated.
“I take this occasion to call on governments at all levels to implement measures that will improve the average Nigerian’s standard of living. If this is accomplished, I am convinced that the future will be brighter and better for us.
“I also appeal to our leaders at all levels of the imperative of making our democracy work for all through justice, equity, fairness and equal spread of development across the country.
“I also urge political leaders to take joint steps to alleviate the surge of insecurity brought on by joblessness and bad living conditions.
“It’s unfortunate that, despite our massive oil reserves, terrible poverty and unemployment have persisted.
There is no explanation for extreme poverty continuing glaring ordinary citizens in the face 61 years after independence.”
Atiku, on the other hand, urged Nigerians not to give up, but to work together in the spirit of truth and justice to solve the issues as a stronger and more united country.
“However, it is fitting to commemorate our wonderful nation’s birthday today.
As a country, we’ve come a long way together,” he remarked.
