In a statement released on Tuesday by the acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council clarified that it had not issued any directive limiting Senior Secondary students’ subject choices for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
WAEC stated that the misleading reports circulating on social media had no basis, urging schools, parents, and the general public to disregard them entirely.
“The Council did not issue any such directive nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged,” the statement read.
The examination body stressed that it had no authority to modify or develop secondary school curricula, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government through its education agencies.

“WAEC’s role is to implement government-approved curricula via assessment. The development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria remain the responsibility of the Federal Government,” the statement added.
Adeshina further reassured stakeholders that any future curriculum changes would follow proper consultation and due process, not arbitrary directives.
Established in 1952, WAEC operates across five West African countries—Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia—and is renowned for its credibility and fairness in student assessment.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are hereby advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council,” WAEC concluded, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and equal opportunity for all candidates.
