The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, presented N2.08 billion cheques to families of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past five years.

The emotional ceremony took place on Thursday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where 785 beneficiaries received the compensation.

During the presentation, IGP Egbetokun acknowledged the irreplaceable nature of the lives lost and emphasized that no amount of money could truly equate to the sacrifices made by the deceased police officers. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the administration’s commitment to the well-being of police officers and urged the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously.

The Force Insurance Officer, CSP Lydia Ameh, credited the IGP’s paternal affection for making the cheque disbursement possible. She highlighted the Inspector-General’s commitment, valued guidance, and extraordinary leadership role in ensuring that pending insurance claims were cleared.

The disbursement covered Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme cheques for the insurance policy years of 2015/2016, 2017/2018, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023, totaling N2,086,801,144.79.

CSP Ameh expressed gratitude for the IGP’s efforts, extending beyond the procurement of the 2022/2023 insurance policy to the complete settlement of all pending payments from previous years. She acknowledged that the financial assistance would go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the families left behind by the departed police officers.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Donald Awunah Jr., the son of former Force Public Relations Officer AIG Donald Awunah, expressed appreciation to IG Egbetokun for his kind gesture. The compensation aims to provide support to the families affected by the loss of their loved ones who served in the Nigeria Police Force.
