Daniel Aturu, who recently completed a 12-year prison sentence at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Owerri, Imo State, has shared how his incarceration became a life-changing experience.

Convicted in 2012 for conspiracy and possession of stolen property, Aturu highlighted the positive impact of his time in prison, expressing gratitude for the support and encouragement he received.

Initially battling depression, Aturu rediscovered himself through various rehabilitation and reformation programs provided by the custodial center. Delighted with the assistance he received, Aturu excelled in laundry services during his incarceration, serving fellow inmates, custodial personnel, and members of the public. His success in providing valuable services led to recognition from the management of the custodial center.

Upon his release on Monday, Aturu pledged to be law-abiding and announced plans to engage youths in his community interested in learning laundry services. To support his reintegration into society, officials from the custodial center bid him farewell and presented him with a washing machine, a donation from a philanthropist.

The washing machine aims to help Aturu continue his laundry business at home, providing him with a means of earning a living. The Command Public Relations Officer, Goodluck Uboegbulam, emphasized Aturu’s positive impact on the custodial center community and society at large over the past 12 years.

Recalling Aturu’s journey, Uboegbulam shared how the former inmate initially struggled with feelings of hopelessness but later embraced rehabilitation and vocational programs. Aturu, a Christian, participated in religious activities and skills acquisition initiatives to mend relationships, achieve inner peace, and develop practical skills. His decision to engage in laundry and dry cleaning showcased a commitment to self-empowerment and functional skills development.

Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Eke Eke, who oversaw Aturu’s discharge, encouraged him to remain focused and maintain good conduct. The Aftercare unit of the custodial facility will monitor Aturu’s progress and support his seamless resettlement into the community.
