Kaduna state governor secures release of 110 inmates for Democracy Day

In commemoration of the 2024 June 12 Democracy Day, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has facilitated the release of 110 inmates from the Kaduna Correctional Centre. This initiative, aimed at decongesting prisons and granting deserving inmates a second chance, was executed in collaboration with renowned rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana.

During their visit to the Kaduna Custodial Centre, Governor Sani explained that 22 convicts would be released on pardon under the prerogative of mercy powers conferred on him by the Constitution. The remaining 88 inmates, convicted with the option of fines or compensation, were also granted freedom.

Expressing concern over the high number of inmates awaiting trial or undergoing trial, Governor Sani emphasized the need for prison decongestion, particularly considering the custodial centre’s capacity. Despite being upgraded to accommodate 1,100 inmates, the centre currently houses 3,000 individuals, leading to overstretched facilities.

Governor Sani urged the released inmates to embrace good conduct and avoid criminal activities. He also emphasized the significance of Democracy Day, highlighting the sacrifices made for freedom.

In his remarks, Femi Falana commended Governor Sani’s efforts and urged him to mandate regular visits by chief magistrates to police detention facilities to prevent unnecessary arrests and reduce prison congestion. He advised the released inmates to steer clear of activities that could lead them back to prison.

The Controller of Correctional Service in Kaduna, Isah Mohammed Nuru, highlighted challenges faced by the custodial centre, including a high number of awaiting-trial inmates and inadequate operational vehicles for court appearances.
