The Lagos State Government has appealed to residents to continue maintaining a cleaner environment as they celebrate Eid-el-Kabir this weekend.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing environmental protection during and after the Sallah celebration. He wished all Muslims a happy Sallah and urged residents to respect the environment, highlighting the significant waste that would be generated and stressing the need for proper disposal.

“We must continue to police our environment, avoid littering our surroundings and drainages with waste, and refrain from dumping waste on road medians, kerbs, open spaces, and road setbacks. Our Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officials are committed to a cleaner Lagos and will be on duty throughout the holiday,” Wahab stated.

He emphasized the administration’s commitment to a continuous campaign for a healthier, safer, cleaner, and flood-free environment. Wahab encouraged residents to avoid actions that could negatively impact the environment and to maintain safety protocols, proper waste handling, personal hygiene, and environmental sanitation to prevent cholera outbreaks.

The Commissioner also reminded residents that the law against street trading is still in force, warning that the state government will not tolerate any form of street trading, including the display of rams on major highways, road medians, walkways, lay-byes, gardens, and parks. He acknowledged that traders often take advantage of the season to market and sell rams but insisted that this should be done in designated markets to avoid defacing the state’s aesthetics and creating traffic bottlenecks.

Wahab concluded by wishing all Muslims a happy Sallah celebration and happy holidays.
