Labour Party chieftain Yunusa Tanko stated that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can determine whether the intervention by Governor Alex Otti and Peter Obi, which led to the formation of a 29-man caretaker committee, is legal.
[dropcap]L[/dropcap]abour Party chieftain, Yunusa Tanko, has commented on the legality of a newly formed 29-man caretaker committee, which was set up through the intervention of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The committee, chaired by former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman, is tasked with leading the party in the interim.

Responding to concerns about the legality of this intervention on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’, Tanko said that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the authority to make a determination. “It is left for INEC to look at the legality and make pronouncement,” he said.
The committee includes members from various interest groups, including the NLC, TUC, and gubernatorial candidates, and is expected to facilitate the election of new leadership within 90 days.
However, the leadership of the party under Julius Abure rejected the committee, calling the meeting convened by Otti illegal.
A statement issued by Labour Party Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh claimed that the committee’s chair, Nenadi Usman, was not a registered party member, adding that her involvement stemmed from her support for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.
