The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stated that any increase in corps members’ allowances following the new minimum wage of N70,000 will be determined by the Federal Government. The NYSC clarified that it has not received any directive regarding changes to allowances.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that any potential increase in the allowance for corps members, following the recent approval of a new minimum wage of N70,000, will be determined by the Federal Government.

This announcement was made by Caroline Embu, the acting Director of the Information and Public Relations unit of the NYSC.

On July 29, 2024, President Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law, increasing the wage to N70,000. This led to speculation about a corresponding rise in corps members’ allowances.

Some reports even suggested that corps members were instructed to upgrade their bank accounts to handle amounts exceeding N50,000.

However, the NYSC has refuted these claims. A statement from the NYSC described the circulated message as “absolute falsehood,” asserting that no directive had been received from the relevant government sectors concerning wage adjustments for corps members.

“The attention of National Youth Service Corps management has been drawn to misleading information circulating in the media regarding payment of N70,000 minimum wage to corps members and the directive to upgrade their accounts.

This is an absolute falsehood which is far from the truth,” the statement, signed by the former Director Information and Public Relations Eddy Megwa, said.

Embu reiterated that the review and potential increase in corps members’ allowances are decisions to be made by the Federal Government.

She confirmed that the NYSC does not have any current information on changes to the allowance and stressed that any future adjustments would align with government decisions on wage policies.
