Acting National President of the Association, Haruna Tsafe, emphasized the importance of this inclusion during his keynote address at the 34th Annual General Meeting and General Election held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

Tsafe argued that the integration of sign language would significantly enhance accessibility and inclusion, facilitating better communication with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals across Nigeria.

He also called on state governments to replicate the enactment of the Disability Bill to eliminate environmental and physical barriers for members of the community, fostering greater cultural understanding.

In support of these efforts, Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enacting the Disability Bill, ensuring that the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities are taken seriously.

Representing the Commissioner, Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs and Social Development, Ayotunde Lawal, noted that the meeting’s theme, “Sign Up For Sign Language Right,” is particularly relevant, highlighting that sign language is more than just a mode of communication; it is a pathway to equality, education, employment, and full societal participation.

Lawal disclosed that the Ogun State government has made significant contributions to promoting and recognizing sign language rights in Nigeria.

The administration is actively working with the disability community to ensure these rights are enshrined in national policies and embraced across all societal sectors.

Adeleye further pointed out that the current administration has positively impacted the disability community through various empowerment initiatives and the provision of essential tools and resources.

Earlier, Ogun State Chairman of the Association of the Deaf, Rasheed Salami, expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in hosting the annual general meeting, praising the administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its members and individuals living with disabilities.
