[dropcap]S[/dropcap]enator Barau Jibrin urges careful deliberation in the constitutional review process, emphasising the need for collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria.

Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, has urged committee members to approach their responsibilities with utmost care. He made this call during the committee’s retreat held at Bristol Palace Hotel in Kano.

In his welcome address, Jibrin stressed that the decisions made during the review will have far-reaching implications for future generations. Therefore, it is crucial that their recommendations align with the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Our task is to work on the 1999 Constitution to meet the wishes of the people,” he stated. Jibrin called for synergy among committee members, the House of Representatives, and other stakeholders to produce a comprehensive report for the Senate’s further deliberation.

He reminded attendees of the enduring values of freedom, equality, and justice. These principles should guide their work as they tackle this challenging assignment. Collaborating with key stakeholders, including state governors and civil society organisations, is essential for meaningful reform.

“This retreat allows for constructive dialogue and collective problem-solving,” Jibrin added. He emphasised that the insights drawn from the committee’s diverse experiences would enrich their discussions.

In a goodwill message, Adebo Ogundiyin, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, praised the committee’s commitment to involving state houses of assembly in the process.

He stressed the importance of timely submissions to prevent delays, as experienced during the 2023 general elections.
