The initiative aims to revolutionise Nigeria’s food security through mechanisation and youth training

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s Nigeria marks her 64th Independence anniversary, the Greener Hope Large Scale Mechanisation Agriculture Productivity Programme (GHAPP) is emerging as a key force in addressing the nation’s food security issues.

GHAPP, a collaboration between the Federal Government, the Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security, and Water Resources and Sanitation, alongside Origin Tech Group, aims to revolutionise agriculture across the country.

This innovative programme will provide farmers with access to modern farm machinery, reduce post-harvest losses, and significantly boost crop yields.

Origin Tech Group, a leader in the agricultural value chain, is excited to be a part of this initiative, which promises to enhance both commercial farming and smallholder enterprises, creating a new agricultural ecosystem for Nigeria. The programme’s focus is on food security, wealth creation, job opportunities, and economic growth.

For the first time, the government has adopted a private sector-driven approach to solve long-standing public sector challenges in agriculture.

GHAPP aims to increase farmers’ incomes, reduce rural-urban migration, and turn rural and semi-urban areas into food hubs for local consumption and export. Other benefits include access to high-yield seeds, extension services, and storage facilities.

GHAPP plans to establish agro-mechanisation centres nationwide to equip farmers with tools and technology, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security interventions.

The programme will also engage 50,000 youth farmers, providing them with comprehensive training on modern farming techniques. These “Agro-preneurs” will help sustain food production and create job opportunities.

The initiative also includes a digital platform for tractor hailing services and aims to create over two million metric tonnes of food through large-scale farming hubs.

These hubs will increase agricultural efficiency and contribute to Nigeria’s GDP. Projects have already begun in Lagos, Niger, and Kogi states, with more states to follow as the programme expands.

Dr. Musa Olasupo, Director of the Greener Hope Initiative, emphasised the importance of the programme in strengthening Nigeria’s food systems, noting its ability to address challenges such as insecurity and climate change.

“This programme is more than an agricultural intervention; it’s an investment in Nigeria’s future,” he said.

As Nigeria reflects on 64 years of independence, GHAPP represents a step toward securing a greener and more sustainable future.

The programme promises to sow the seeds of prosperity, ensuring the nation’s food security for generations to come.
