PDP faction seeks court order to block NEC meeting amid leadership tussle

PDP faction led by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed seeks court order to block NEC meeting, deepening the party’s leadership crisis ahead of Thursday.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the party’s planned National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, scheduled for Thursday.

The lawsuit, filed by Imam Auwal at the Zamfara High Court in Gusau Judicial Division on Tuesday, also targets the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requesting that they be prevented from annulling the upcoming NEC meeting.

The legal action challenges a previous Abuja Federal High Court injunction, which had barred the PDP from removing its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

The faction seeks to have that injunction set aside, allowing for a resolution of the party’s leadership crisis.

The intra-party dispute centres on disagreements over the acting chairmanship of Umar Damagum, which has created factions within the PDP.

The Bauchi governor’s faction opposes any attempts to replace Damagum, raising concerns that the NEC meeting could result in leadership changes that would destabilise the party.

As of the time of reporting, it remains unclear how the other prominent PDP faction, which is loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, will respond to the lawsuit.

Wike’s camp has been a key player in the ongoing tensions within the party, and its reaction could significantly impact the future of PDP’s leadership structure.

The deepening crisis comes amid growing concerns about the party’s unity ahead of key political events in the coming year, particularly with the 2025 general elections on the horizon.

Efforts to resolve the leadership dispute will be crucial to ensuring the party’s ability to present a united front in future political contests.
