Super Eagles move up in FIFA rankings

The Super Eagles of Nigeria climb three spots to 36th in the October FIFA rankings, reflecting recent victories and improved performance in global football.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed three places in the latest FIFA rankings, moving up to 36th globally.

This significant improvement follows their 1-0 victory over Libya in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on October 11, 2024.

The Nigerian team now holds 1503.29 points, a positive result of their consistent performance during the review period.

This movement has also boosted Nigeria’s continental standing. The Super Eagles are now ranked 4th in Africa, surpassing their previous 6th position from September. They are currently positioned behind Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt.

The latest rankings were released after a particularly busy international football window, with matches from the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, CAF AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Nations League, and several friendlies shaping the global standings.

On the world stage, Argentina remains at the top of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking, followed closely by France and Spain.

Despite holding onto their spots, the gap between the top three has narrowed. England, Brazil, and Belgium retain their respective 4th, 5th, and 6th positions.

Portugal and Italy both moved up one spot to 7th and 9th respectively, while the Netherlands and Colombia dropped by one position each, completing the top 10.

Other notable movers include Algeria, climbing to 37th, Peru jumping to 38th, and Greece rising to 42nd. Cameroon has made a return to the top 50, standing at 49th after gaining four spots.

Within Africa, teams like Equatorial Guinea (88th), Zimbabwe (117th), The Gambia (128th), and Botswana (140th) have made impressive leaps, with Botswana posting the biggest jump overall, gaining 38.30 points.

This upward trend for the Super Eagles offers optimism ahead of their upcoming AFCON fixtures, as they continue to build momentum towards international tournaments like the FIFA World Cup 2026.
