The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old businessman, Akinola Damilare, popularly known as “General Don”, over alleged impersonation of military personnel and attempted murder.
The suspect was arrested at about 2am on Tuesday, November 3, at Kajola, Elega, in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The arrest followed intelligence provided by a community leader and subsequent surveillance by operatives of the command’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.
The police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development while presenting the suspect in Abeokuta.
Items reportedly recovered from Damilare included a military face cap, a pair of three-quarter military trousers and four photographs showing him dressed in military uniform.
The police said the operation was intelligence-led and formed part of efforts to tackle impersonation and other criminal activities in the state.
Although the arrest has also been linked to an allegation of attempted murder, the police have not publicly provided details of the alleged incident or explained the circumstances surrounding the accusation.
Babaseyi said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences and determine whether other individuals were connected to the case.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities, including impersonation, and urged residents to report suspicious conduct to security agencies.
The suspect’s arrest comes amid efforts by security agencies to address the impersonation of military and other security personnel.
Damilare remains a suspect, and the allegations against him have not been established in court.
