US government fines American Airlines $50 million for disability violations

American Airlines disability fine

The US government fines American Airlines $50 million for failing to provide proper assistance to passengers with disabilities.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he United States government has imposed a hefty fine of $50 million on American Airlines for mistreating individuals with disabilities.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the penalty, citing violations of laws designed to protect the rights of disabled passengers.

An investigation by the DOT uncovered instances of inadequate physical assistance provided to wheelchair users, which sometimes resulted in injuries and undignified treatment.

Regulations stipulate that airlines must return wheelchairs and other mobility devices in the same condition they were received and must provide timely assistance to disabled passengers when boarding, disembarking, and navigating airports.

The investigation highlighted “repeated failures to provide prompt wheelchair assistance,” and The New York Times reported that American Airlines mishandled thousands of wheelchairs, leading to damages and delays in their return. This left many passengers without the mobility devices essential for their travel.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasised that the era of accepting poor treatment of airline passengers with disabilities is over.

“With this penalty, we are setting a new standard of accountability for airlines that violate the civil rights of passengers with disabilities,” he stated.

Buttigieg explained that the fine was intentionally set at a level higher than what is typically considered the cost of doing business for airlines, with the goal of driving a change in industry practices.

This significant fine underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the respectful and necessary assistance they require while travelling.
