Bandits in Niger State attacked Wayam village, killing 10 residents and displacing the community, as locals call for urgent security intervention.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n a devastating raid, bandits on motorcycles attacked the farming community of Wayam in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, killing at least 10 people, including women and children.

The attack, which took place early Tuesday as residents prepared to head to their farms, saw the assailants burning homes, shops, and food stores, and committing brutal acts of violence against villagers who attempted to resist them.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bandits arrived in large numbers, riding motorcycles and firing shots to create chaos.

One resident, who requested anonymity out of fear of reprisals, described the horrific scene, saying, “They were everywhere, shooting to frighten us.

Some women who tried to resist were slaughtered, while others suffered severe injuries. The attackers stayed for hours, destroying everything in their path.”

The attackers reportedly numbered over 50 and set fire to structures in the community. According to sources, the bandits also retreated towards Kaduna State, particularly the Birnin Gwari area, which borders Wayam, after the attack.

With the community now deserted, residents mourn the loss of loved ones amid fears of further violence. The entire village has reportedly been abandoned, with survivors seeking refuge in neighbouring areas, fearing the bandits’ return.

This assault follows another attack six months ago on the nearby Madaka community, which left 60 people dead, highlighting a troubling pattern of unchecked violence in the region.

Repeatedly targeted by armed groups, the Rafi Local Government Area is grappling with insecurity that has forced many residents to flee.

Local officials and community members have called for urgent intervention, as many believe the area’s proximity to the border with Kaduna State makes it vulnerable to frequent raids.

Efforts to reach Niger State Police Command spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun for comments were unsuccessful, as he had not responded by the time of filing this report.

The attack underscores the pressing need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities in Niger State.

Residents are pleading for a stronger security presence to restore peace to the area and allow them to return to their homes safely.
