NCC new telecom tariff plans

The NCC will introduce new telecom tariff plans on December 13, aiming to simplify offerings and enhance consumer transparency in Nigeria.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the introduction of new tariff plans for telecom operators, set to take effect from December 13, 2024.

The move, which had previously been scheduled for October 27 but was postponed, aims to simplify telecom services and enhance consumer transparency.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, November 28, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, highlighted the benefits of the new plans.

According to him, the revised tariffs will reduce confusion among consumers regarding data and airtime usage by streamlining offerings.

Under the new framework, telecom operators will be restricted to a maximum of seven tariff plans. This measure is designed to ensure clarity and make it easier for consumers to select the most suitable plans for their needs.

Addressing consumer complaints about rapid data depletion, the NCC clarified that telecom operators are not responsible for the issue.

Instead, the type of smartphone a consumer uses significantly impacts data consumption. To address these concerns, the NCC has launched awareness campaigns to educate users on managing data usage and selecting appropriate devices.

“These efforts are part of our commitment to creating a transparent and consumer-friendly telecommunications market,” Dr Maida stated.

The revised tariff plans are expected to bring much-needed relief to telecom consumers across Nigeria by ensuring fair pricing and promoting informed decision-making in the use of telecom services.
