EFCC clarifies Jonathan Okunbor election witness fraud

Jonathan Okunbor is not an election witness but a suspect in a N6 billion fraud involving Kezmith Global Ventures

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to a viral video alleging that Jonathan Okunbor, a suspect in a N6 billion fraud case, was an election witness.

The EFCC has unequivocally stated that Okunbor is not a witness for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election tribunal, contrary to claims made by Mr. Asue Ighodalo.

The Commission has confirmed that Okunbor is a prime suspect in an ongoing investigation into the misappropriation of funds amounting to approximately N6 billion.

This money was allegedly diverted to Kezmith Global Ventures, a company owned by Okunbor, who was operating under the false identity of Mr. Godfrey Emode. Investigators have uncovered the depth of the fraud, implicating all 18 local government areas in Edo State.

EFCC operatives traced Okunbor’s whereabouts after an arrest was made in connection to the case. They apprehended Mr. Emode, who led them to Okunbor at the Eterno Hotel, where a pre-trial meeting was taking place.

Upon questioning, Emode clarified that Okunbor was not involved in the election tribunal matters, as suggested by Ighodalo.

However, despite the clear explanation, Ighodalo and his associates at Eterno Hotel attempted to hinder the EFCC’s investigation, preventing officers from carrying out their constitutional duties.

Ighodalo falsely insisted that Okunbor was an election witness, despite the lack of evidence to support this claim. It became apparent that this obstruction was an attempt to facilitate Okunbor’s escape.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and has made it clear that its investigation into the N6 billion fraud case will continue.

The Commission has stated that it has no interest in any election-related witnesses unless there are corruption charges involved.

It assured the public that Okunbor will soon face legal consequences for his role in the alleged fraud through his company, Kezmith Global Ventures.

The EFCC is determined to bring all individuals involved in corruption to justice, regardless of their status in political matters.
