DJ Jimmy Jatt shares his battle with kidney disease, from sight loss to a transplant, and his return to music after recovery

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]enowned Nigerian disc jockey, Oluwaforijimi Amu, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has opened up about his health challenges, including losing his sight and undergoing a kidney transplant.

The revelation came during a recent episode of Rubbin’ Minds on Channels TV, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

In 2022, DJ Jimmy Jatt publicly disclosed his successful kidney transplant. Reflecting on the journey, he revealed that the ordeal began in 2020 when he lost his sight.

“I underwent surgery to regain my sight, and not long after, I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease,” he shared.

His health struggles coincided with a personal decision to explore the world after spending most of his life in Nigeria.

“In 2019, I told myself I wanted to spend more time outside Nigeria. I’ve lived most of my life in Lagos, and I wanted to see Europe, America, and other parts of the world,” he explained.

However, his plans were disrupted in 2020 when travel restrictions and health issues kept him in Nigeria. Following his sight restoration surgery, he relocated to the U.S., where he was diagnosed with kidney disease and placed on dialysis.

Despite the diagnosis, DJ Jimmy Jatt continued his craft, DJing across Europe and America while managing his condition.

“Eventually, I came back to Nigeria for the transplant. After the procedure, I took time off to recover fully before returning abroad,” he said. His return to Nigeria in December marked a new chapter in his career and personal life.

DJ Jimmy Jatt emphasised that lifestyle choices are not always responsible for kidney disease. “I’ve never smoked, and I stopped drinking alcohol a long time ago,” he noted, revealing that his ailment stemmed from diabetes.
