Tony Elumelu’s Democratising Luck initiative aims to empower African entrepreneurs, transforming the continent’s economic landscape

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]t the Legacy Builders Palm Beach Conference held at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Florida on 4–5 February 2025, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation and chairman of Heirs Holdings Group, UBA Group, and Transcorp Group, delivered a compelling keynote address titled “Democratising Luck.”

In his speech, Elumelu shared his personal journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent African businessman and philanthropist, emphasising his commitment to empowering the next generation of African entrepreneurs.

Elumelu highlighted Africa’s dynamic demographics, noting its population of 1.5 billion, which is expected to double in 25 years, and a median age of 19. He described young Africans as some of the most industrious and entrepreneurial individuals globally, capable of transforming the continent’s future. This belief led to the establishment of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, through which Elumelu has dedicated $100 million over the past 15 years to identify, train, and fund African entrepreneurs.

Reflecting on his career, Elumelu recounted his rise in the banking sector, where he led a group of investors to revitalise a struggling bank, resulting in the largest bank merger in sub-Saharan Africa to date.

His banking group now operates in 20 African countries and on four continents, serving over 45 million customers.

Beyond banking, his diversified investments include significant ventures in oil production, power generation, real estate, healthcare, and technology, all aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs in Nigeria and across Africa.

Central to Elumelu’s philosophy is the concept of “democratising luck”—the idea that opportunities should not be limited to a select few but made accessible to all, especially young Africans with entrepreneurial aspirations.

Through his foundation, over 2.5 million Africans have received training via the TEFConnect online portal, lifting more than 2 million individuals out of poverty. Direct funding exceeding $100 million has been disbursed to over 21,000 beneficiaries, resulting in the creation of 1.5 million jobs and generating $4.2 billion in revenue across the continent.

Elumelu’s commitment extends beyond financial support; he advocates for mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and building networks to support and uplift emerging entrepreneurs.

He calls upon successful individuals to become mentors, investors, and champions for those who need a chance, emphasising that Africa’s rise will be the result of deliberate action and collective effort.

In his concluding remarks, Elumelu invited attendees to join his mission of driving meaningful and sustainable impact, transforming Africa one entrepreneur at a time. He expressed his belief in creating a future where every African can dream and achieve, underscoring the importance of collaboration in realising this vision.
